Medical imaging equipment — CT scanners, MRI systems, digital X-ray units, C-arms — requires input voltage stability within tighter tolerances than almost any other category of industrial equipment. A CT scanner mid-scan exposed to a voltage event will abort the acquisition, lose the scan data, and require the patient to be rescanned — with all the associated radiation exposure, time, and cost implications. An MRI system experiencing voltage disturbance during image acquisition produces artefacts that can be mistaken for pathology or cause diagnostic errors.

In an operating theatre, the consequences are more serious. Surgical lights, electrosurgical units, laparoscopic equipment, and patient monitoring systems must maintain continuous operation without interruption or deviation. Power quality events that would be a nuisance in a factory become life-critical events in a surgical setting. The Indian standard for electrical safety in medical locations — IS 732 and NABH guidelines — specifies power quality requirements that cannot be met without voltage regulation in most Indian hospital environments.
